Role Overview
Reporting to the Operations Supervisor, the Utility Operator II is responsible for daily maintenance, operation, repair, and replacement of the Town’s water distribution, stormwater collection, and sanitary sewer systems. This is a senior operator position that provides direction, manual assistance, and training to junior assisting staff.

Key Responsibilities
- Operate and maintain equipment used in water distribution and wastewater collection
- Diagnose and repair system issues, including breaks, valves, and hydrants
- Perform inspections, sampling, pressure testing, and meter maintenance
- Conduct sewer flushing and system maintenance
- Monitor and become familiar with SCADA systems
- Assist with inventory control and coordination with contractors
- Provide direction, assistance, and training to junior staff
- Participate in emergency response and on-call rotations
Required Qualifications
Experience and Education
- High School Diploma or GED
- Completion of Level II Water Distribution and Wastewater Collection Certification (AWWOA)
- Minimum 3 years’ experience in municipal water or wastewater facility
- Working knowledge of applicable legislation, codes, and safety standards
Conditions of Employment
- Satisfactory Criminal Record Check
- Valid Class 5 Driver’s License (Class 3 with Air Brake Endorsement preferred; Class 3 Q required within 6 months)
- Valid First Aid and CPR Certification
- Immunization for Hepatitis B and Tetanus
- Participation in on-call and standby rotations
- Compliance with Occupational Health and Safety legislation and Town policies
Physical Requirements
This position requires the safe and skilled operation of tools, instruments, and heavy equipment. The role demands physical endurance to complete labour-intensive tasks and operate machinery for extended periods. Regular heavy lifting, bending, reaching, pushing, pulling, climbing, frequent standing, and walking are required. The ability to safely perform physically demanding work in variable environmental conditions is essential.
Travel
Travel to field sites within and outside the Town is required under varying road and weather conditions. The role requires maintaining alertness and applying defensive driving practices when operating vehicles in traffic, adverse weather, and other dynamic or potentially hazardous conditions.
Preferred Qualifications
- Post-secondary education in Water and Wastewater Operations is considered an asset
- Experience mentoring or assisting junior operators is preferred
Compensation & Benefits
- Full-Time | Permanent | 40 Hours per Week
- Hourly Wage Range: $40.85 – $44.44 per hour + Comprehensive Benefits
- Work on-call or stand-by shifts for after hour call out or emergencies

Work Environment
Work is performed at the Water Treatment Plant (WTP), lift stations, booster stations, reservoirs, pump houses, and throughout the Town’s water distribution and wastewater collection systems. The role involves potential exposure to biohazards and multiple energy sources, including high-pressure, electrical, pneumatic, and mechanical systems. Work may occur in confined spaces and around high-voltage equipment. Operators may also work near mobile equipment such as loaders and forklifts. Duties are performed in hazardous, unsanitary, and all-weather conditions, with low-risk exposure to treatment chemicals in accordance with established safety protocols.
