The Testing Process
Below is an outline of tests firefighter candidates may complete during the recruitment process as part of their firefighter testing journey. The specific tests vary by municipality or organization, so requirements depend on where you apply.
Note: The information below serves as an overview and may not reflect each test exactly. Always confirm the process directly with the hiring employer.
Standardized Tests
Test One: Physical Fitness (Including V02 max) 🏃♂️ – valid for 6 months
The physical fitness test is completed at the University of Alberta. Firefighter Fitness Testing | Faculty of Kinesiology, Sport, and Recreation (ualberta.ca)
The firefighter physical fitness test is a comprehensive assessment designed to evaluate a candidate’s physical fitness and ability to perform the essential duties of a firefighter. The U of A has a open registration for you to book your test that fits your schedule.
You must pass all tests in order to successfully complete the overall evaluation. All of the tests are completed while wearing firefighting personal protective equipment (PPE) that weighs approximately 23 kg (51 lb), depending on size.
Once registered for the test you will receive additional instructions.
Test Two: Aptitude Test and Character, Technical Skills 🧠 – valid for 1 year
The firefighter aptitude test is a standardized assessment designed to evaluate a candidate’s cognitive and behavioural attributes that are essential for the role of a firefighter.
The test typically consists of the following components:
- Reading Comprehension:
- Candidates are assessed for their ability to read and comprehend written materials related to firefighting scenarios, equipment, and procedures.
- Mathematical Reasoning:
- This component evaluates a candidate’s ability to perform basic arithmetic, algebra, and geometry to solve problems commonly encountered in firefighting situations.
- Situational Judgment:
- This component assesses a candidate’s ability to evaluate different firefighting scenarios and make appropriate decisions based on the information provided.
- Mechanical Reasoning:
- Candidates are assessed for their ability to understand basic mechanical principles and their application to firefighting equipment and tools.
- Personality and Behavioural Traits:
- This component of the test measures a candidate’s personality and behavioural traits, including their interpersonal skills, work ethic, integrity, and emotional stability.
The firefighter aptitude test is administered online in a proctored timed and standardized format. The test is used to identify candidates with the cognitive and behavioral attributes that are essential for success as a firefighter.
Test Three: Medical Knowledge 🩺 – valid for 1 year
Candidates will be tested based on their certification level: Advanced Care Paramedic, Primary Care Paramedic, Emergency Medical Responder, First Medical Responder.
The medical knowledge test is an assessment designed to evaluate a candidate’s understanding of medical concepts and practices.
The medical knowledge test is administered in a timed and standardized format. There is a written, verbal and practical component to the testing. The test is used to identify candidates with the medical knowledge and understanding required for emergency medical services.
Test Four: Confined Space Assessment 🕳️ – valid for 1 year
A firefighter confined space assessment is an evaluation of a firefighter’s ability to safely enter and rescue individuals from confined dark spaces.
Test Five: Ropes and Knots Assessment 🪢 – valid for 1 year
Ropes and knots are used in various settings, such as rescue operations, to secure objects or to create a system for ascending or descending.
A ropes and knots component of an assessment evaluates an individual’s ability to tie different types of knots, properly use ropes and cords to secure objects or create an anchor, and perform other rope-based tasks commonly used in rescue operations.
Test Six: Heights Test – Ladder Climb Component 🪜 – valid for 1 year
The ladder component of an assessment involves the evaluation of an individual’s ability to safely and effectively use a ladder in a variety of settings.
The assessment includes tasks such as safely ascending and descending a ladder, using the proper techniques for extending or retracting a ladder, and securing a ladder in place to prevent movement or collapse.

Prepare to Test
Firefighting is a physically demanding and potentially dangerous profession. Firefighters must maintain a high level of physical fitness and technical knowledge to perform their duties effectively and safely.
Many fire departments set pre-test requirements to ensure applicants are physically and mentally prepared for the job. These requirements vary from one department to another, but all aim to confirm that candidates can meet the challenges of the profession.
Here are a few examples of pre-test requirements:
Physical Fitness Test 🏃♂️:
Firefighting is a physically demanding job, and candidates must be able to meet certain physical fitness standards. You must be able to lift and drag heavy objects, climb stairs, and move quickly in sometimes dangerous situations.

Medical Knowledge Test 🩺:
There are different levels of medical knowledge departments may require. If you are tested on your medical knowledge , you would be tested on the level of certification you are registered with the Alberta College of Paramedics. The test will include a written , verbal and practical scenarios.
- Advanced Care Paramedic (ACP),
- Primary Care Paramedic (PCP),
- Emergency Medical Responder (EMR),
- Medical First Responder (MFR)
- Advanced First Aid (AFA)

Aptitude Test 🧠:
Evaluates on firefighter competencies which includes teamwork, human relations and behavioural skills , mechanical aptitude, reading, and math skills.

Confined Space Test 🕳️:
Confined spaces are areas that are difficult to access and exit, and which may have limited ventilation or other hazardous conditions that can pose a risk to human health and safety.
It is important for individuals who are interested in becoming firefighters to assess their own comfort level with confined spaces and other potentially stressful situations before pursuing a career in firefighting.
Ropes & Knots Test 🪢:
Firefighters are often required to perform a variety of tasks that involve ropes and knots, such as rescue operations, building ventilation, and hoisting equipment or supplies.
As a result, it is important for firefighters to have a solid understanding of rope and knot tying techniques, as well as the equipment and tools used in these operations.
Height Test 🪜:
Height-related work is a common part of a firefighter’s job, as they are often required to perform operations at elevated heights, such as during high-angle rescues, building inspections, or firefighting operations that require accessing rooftops or upper floors.
Therefore, it is important for firefighters to be comfortable with heights and have the necessary training and equipment to perform their duties safely.
Conditional Offer Requirements
Aspiring firefighters are expected to maintain high levels of professionalism and trustworthiness, and therefore may require to undergo background checks, medical and drug tests as part of the hiring process.
The following are some examples of conditional offer requirements:
- Criminal Record Check:
- Must have been granted a pardon or record suspension for any criminal convictions. Includes vulnerable sector check.
- Medical Exam:
- Candidates may be required to undergo a medical examination to ensure that they are physically and mentally fit to perform the duties of a firefighter.
- Requirements are based on the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1582 Standards. The NFPA standards also lists disqualifying medical conditions.
- Proof of Immunization – including Hepatitis B, Rubella, Measles, and Tetanus.
- Meet NFPA 1582 Vision Standard
- Normal Unaided Hearing
- Employment Reference Checks – be ready to provide the employer with 3 work references
- Documented Proof of Education may be required
- Proof of a Valid Driver’s License and Driver’s Abstract (less than 7 demerits):

- Only every two years – a licence holder can only use the demerit reduction program once every two years.
- Avoid Speeding – make a commitment to yourself that you will no longer speed
